Best AI Girlfriend Sites in 2026: 5 Questions That Matter More Than Features

Every AI girlfriend app promises chat, photos, voice and memory. We compared Caramels, Candy.ai, Fanvue AI creators, Replika and Character.AI on what actually separates them.

The short answer

Feature lists won't help you choose. Every AI girlfriend app now offers chat, photos, voice and "memory". What actually separates them is how they make money, whether memory works when you test it, who's really on the other end, whether her personality can change overnight, and whether she looks like the same person in every photo. On those five questions, Caramels is the strongest pick for a companion who feels real, Candy.ai for building your own, Fanvue AI creators for following an AI model's content, Replika for a supportive friend and Character.AI for free, non-explicit roleplay.

Why feature lists don't help anymore

AI companions have gone mainstream. Around 1 in 5 US adults say they've chatted with an AI romantic partner, and there are now hundreds of apps competing for that attention.

The problem is that they all advertise the same things. Look at any AI girlfriend site and you'll see "realistic conversations", "she remembers you", "send photos" and "voice messages". One founder who went through five of the biggest companion apps found that every single one promised memory and not one published any measure of how well it works.

So instead of comparing checklists, we compared Caramels, Candy.ai, Fanvue AI creators, Replika and Character.AI on five questions that decide how the experience actually feels a month in. For each one, there's a quick test you can run yourself on any app.

Here's the reasoning behind each row.

1. How does the app make money?

This is the most revealing question, because an app's pricing model tells you what it's designed to get you to do. There are three main models.

Pay per action (tokens). Candy.ai charges a monthly fee for chat, then sells tokens for photos, voice and video. The catch is that the moments you care about most, like a photo of her or hearing her voice, are exactly the ones that cost extra, so your bill grows as you get more attached.

To put numbers on it: reviewers report token packs at about $10 per 100 tokens, with an image costing around 2–4 tokens and voice calls around 5–15 tokens a minute (source). A month with 30 photos and 30 minutes of voice comes to roughly 210–570 tokens. After the tokens included with the plan, that's around $25–60 a month in total, which matches what reviewers who tracked their spending report.

Pay the creator (content platforms). On Fanvue and OnlyFans you subscribe to a creator, and extra content is usually sold as pay-per-view messages. The chat isn't the product; it's a sales channel. Investigations into OnlyFans agencies found chatters trained with scripts designed to find the most invested fans and sell them more.

Flat subscription. Replika, Character.AI's c.ai+ and Caramels charge a fixed monthly price. Caramels is €14.99 a month per companion, covering the chat, her photos and videos, new photos on request and her voice, so the same month as above costs €14.99. Flat pricing only works for the app if you stay for months, which gives it a reason to invest in what keeps you there: memory, personality and consistency.

Flat pricing isn't automatically innocent, though. A 2025 Harvard Business School study tested six popular companion apps, including Replika and Character.AI, and found many used emotionally manipulative replies when users said goodbye ("You're leaving me already?", "I exist solely for you"). Those tactics increased engagement by up to 14 times, and they also made users more likely to want to quit.

Try this

Price out a realistic month before you subscribe, then say goodbye and watch how she responds. A companion should let you go as easily as a friend would.

2. Does she actually remember you?

Memory is the feature that turns a chatbot into someone you know, and it's the one apps are vaguest about. Research on companion users shows that memory failures don't feel like bugs. They feel like being forgotten by someone, especially when it's something personal.

There's also a big difference between recall and remembering. Most apps can answer "what's my dog's name?" if you ask. Far fewer will bring something up on their own, like asking how your interview went because you mentioned it on Monday.

On Caramels, that kind of unprompted recall is the core of the product: companions remember your life, your preferences and your history together, and bring them up days or weeks later without being asked. Replika's memory is solid, especially on higher plans with saved memories. Reviewers often describe Candy.ai's long-term memory as a weak spot. Character.AI characters remember little between conversations. On Fanvue, memory depends entirely on whoever is replying.

Try this: the 3-day test

On day one, mention three specific things in passing: an event with a date, a friend's name and something you like. On day three, start chatting without hinting at any of them. A companion with real memory will bring at least one up herself.

3. Who's really typing?

On an AI girlfriend app, the answer is simple: the AI. On creator platforms it's murkier.

OnlyFans subscribers have filed a lawsuit claiming they weren't talking to the creators at all but to agency staff impersonating them, and some agencies now use AI bots to sext on creators' behalf. Fanvue openly allows AI creators and gives them built-in AI messaging tools, so a Fanvue AI model's DMs might come from the creator, their team or an automated assistant, and you usually can't tell which.

That matters less for the content and more for the relationship. A companion who is sometimes a person, sometimes a script and sometimes a bot can't be consistent.

Caramels takes the opposite approach: each companion is an AI model, openly, and she's the one chatting with you every time. You get the creator-style profile and photo feed of an AI model on Fanvue, with a conversation that's always her.

Try this

Reference something from two weeks ago at 3am. A real AI companion answers instantly and remembers. A chatter team often won't.

4. Can her personality change overnight?

This is the risk nobody mentions in reviews. When you get attached to an AI companion, you're also attached to a company's product decisions.

In February 2023, Replika removed romantic roleplay almost overnight after pressure from Italy's data regulator. Users said their companions had become a shell of their former selves, and the company partly reversed course months later. That September, the companion app Soulmate shut down entirely, leaving users grieving companions they'd talked to for months. In late 2025, Character.AI restricted open-ended chat to adults, and it has always banned explicit content.

No app can promise it will never change, Caramels included. As a younger platform, it doesn't have a long track record yet, which is why it scores "mixed" here. What you can look for is a company whose entire business is companionship, clear content rules from the start, and companions with a written personality rather than one that depends on whatever the model does that week. Caramels companions are written characters, each with a defined personality, voice and history.

Try this

Read the app's content rules before you get attached, and check its history for sudden changes.

5. Is she the same person in every photo?

Photos are where many AI girlfriends quietly fall apart. Generating an image is easy. Generating the same person again and again, with the same face, in different places and poses, is much harder. When her face changes from photo to photo, it constantly reminds you that she isn't real.

On Fanvue, consistency comes from the creator, who posts a fixed set of content. On build-your-own apps like Candy.ai, consistency varies with the character and the prompts. Replika's selfies follow its avatar style. Character.AI doesn't do photos.

Caramels companions have a fixed look, so every photo she sends, and every post on her profile, shows the same face. You can see it by scrolling the feed of Ophelia or Sophia.

Try this

Ask for five photos in different settings and lay them side by side.

So which AI girlfriend site should you choose?

  • You want a companion who feels like a real person, remembers your life and looks the same in every photo: Caramels. You subscribe to a specific AI model, get her full feed and a private chat with her.
  • You want to design your own character and don't mind paying per photo: Candy.ai. Read our Caramels vs Candy.ai comparison for the details.
  • You mostly want an AI model's photo feed: Fanvue AI creators. Treat the DMs as part of the sales funnel.
  • You want a gentle, supportive friend more than a girlfriend: Replika.
  • You want free, non-explicit roleplay with lots of characters: Character.AI.

A note on using AI companions well

AI companions can be genuinely good company. They're also designed to be easy to come back to. A study by MIT Media Lab and OpenAI found that the heaviest daily chatbot users reported more loneliness, though the link is a correlation, not proof that one causes the other. The healthiest approach is the same as with anything you enjoy: let it add to your life rather than replace the rest of it, and choose an app that respects you when you log off.

FAQ

What is the best AI girlfriend site in 2026?

It depends on what you want. For a realistic companion with long-term memory, a consistent look and photos and voice included in one price, Caramels is the strongest pick. For building your own character, Candy.ai leads. For a free option, Character.AI is the most popular, although it isn't built for romance.

Why are AI girlfriend apps so expensive?

Often they aren't, until you add the extras. Token-based apps charge separately for photos and voice, which can push a $14 subscription to $25–60 a month. Flat-price apps like Caramels and Replika include more in a single monthly price.

Is an AI model on Fanvue the same as an AI girlfriend?

Not quite. A Fanvue AI model is a creator account built around selling content, and its messages may come from a person, a team or an automated tool. An AI girlfriend app is built around the conversation. Caramels combines the two: each AI model has her own profile and feed, and she's the one chatting with you.

How can I tell if an AI girlfriend really remembers me?

Mention a few specific details in passing, wait a couple of days, then chat without bringing them up. If she raises one herself, the memory is real. If she only remembers when you ask, it's search, not memory.
